Separating From Your Spouse
After making the decision to terminate
your marriage, there are some sensible
steps and safe guards that you can take
to make the process smoother as well as
to protect yourself and your assets.
Here are some suggestions to help you
proceed.
·
Complete a free case review or call

attorney in your area.
·
Copy important paperwork such as:
pre-marital agreements, financial
statements, pay-stubs, business records,
deeds, mortgages, investment records,
debt information, tax returns, employee
benefit information, etc. It is
suggested that you keep this packet of
information in a safe place.
·
Inventory items of value. Take pictures
or video tape these items.
·
Look into health insurance issues. If
you do not carry insurance with your
employee, find out if you can maintain
it through your spouse’s employer.
·
Establish accounts into your name:
checking account, credit card,
utilities, etc.
·
Cancel joint credit cards and accounts.
·
Keep track of information: history of
marital problems, phone calls, meetings
and financial transactions related to
the divorce.
·
Establish a network of support. Often
times you and your spouse will share
friends, which may make things awkward.
·
Be informed. The more you know about
divorce, custody, support, etc., the
better you will be.
·
Re-evaluate your own budget and
finances. As you begin life as a single
individual or single parent, you may
have new mortgages or rent payment to
make, children to support, car and
insurance payments and the list goes
on. Though you may eventually receive
some money for child support or
maintenance support, you need to face
the facts that you are now solely
responsible for your bills, debts and
livelihood.
·
Manage your emotions. Consult with a
counselor, therapist or other support
person as needed for support.
