The Price of Divorce
Like most things, lawyer fees are often
dependent on market conditions. A well
know lawyer in a big city will charge
more than a lesser know lawyer in a
small town. When talking with your
lawyer, be up front about what you can
afford to pay. Expect the lawyer to be
up front about what and how they charge
for their services, including the extra
things often required during the divorce
process. If your case is a complex
case, ask your lawyer to consult with
you prior to hiring expensive
investigators or experts.
Standard payment arrangements include
hourly rates, flat fee, retainers or
contingency fees.
·
Hourly rate is a method in which you
will pay your lawyer per hour they work
on your case.
·
Flat fee is one charge for your lawyer
to handle your divorce from the
beginning to the end.
·
Retainer is an arrangement for a fee to
be paid prior to legal services
beginning.
·
Contingency fees vary from case to case,
normally dependent on the depth of the
case. Typically the lawyer will charge
you a percentage of recovery received as
a result of a settlement or at the end
of the trial. In most cases, the client
is not responsible for paying the lawyer
unless there is recovery.
