What is Divorce?
Divorce is often referred to as the
dissolution of marriage. Certain steps must
be taken to obtain a legal judgment that
dissolves or severs marriage. A divorce has
legal requirements that must be met such as
legal grounds, jurisdictional requirements,
residency and waiting periods. In addition,
a divorce may require property division,
maintenance payments, arrangements for child
custody and child support, among other
things. Once a marriage has been severed,
both parties are returned to the status of a
single individual. Once legally divorced,
parties are free to remarry. However, some
states may require a waiting period prior to
remarrying.
