Long-Distance Custody Issues:

One of the more difficult custody arrangements is when the non-custodial parent lives a distance away from the custodial parent.  Day and overnight visits are normally impossible, especially for younger children.  Depending on the distance between residences, visits may only occur during school breaks or a parent’s vacation. This can be both difficult for parents and children.  Financial responsibility for travel normally is divided between parents and this can also limit the number of visits children receive with the non-custodial parent.

Just because one parent lives a distance away from their child does not mean they cannot be involved in their child’s life.  It is important that your custody agreement clearly state your rights for visitation and ability to stay in contact with your child.  Your lawyer can assist you in making sure your agreement is done correctly and that you continue to have access to your children.  Below are some suggestions to help you and your child combat the challenge of living far apart:

·         Phone calls, internet contact, letters and pictures help you keep in contact with your child and let your child know you are thinking of them.

·         Provide your child with the ability to keep in contact with you through phone calling cards, pre-addressed envelopes and internet set-up when possible.

·         Save money to be used for visiting your child and helping them be able to visit your home.

·         For younger children, record stories that can be played at bedtime.  There are also photo frames and even stuffed animals that allow for brief recordings.

·         Depending on your legal custody status, establish open lines of communication with your child’s school.  Most schools will send you copies of important paperwork and report cards.  If on good terms with the other parent, ask them to video tape plays and extracurricular activities.
