MANAGING YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY AFTER DIVORCE

As soon as friends and family find out about your separation or divorce, you may instantly find yourself the center of everyone’s conversation and sympathy.  Though their intentions may be good, their constant questions and concerns may become overwhelming.  Not only are they concerned for you, they will inevitably have their own feelings and solutions about your situation.  Finding a common ground in accepting their help and concern can sometimes be a difficult place to find.

It is important that you find your own comfort level about your divorce.  Some people find they just need to talk and talk about their divorce and others never want the subject mentioned.  Some seek out a support group or counseling and others join a fitness gym.

After you have given this serious thought, it is important that you talk openly and honestly with others about how they can help you as you find your way through ‘your’ divorce.  Some family and friends will not take kindly to you telling them to mind their own business, but letting them go on and on may be more harmful to your relationship than being upfront with them in the beginning.

When divorced couples share friends, it is sometimes difficult to manage these relationships.  The more honest you can be the better off you will be.  Set boundaries.  Be realistic in knowing that these relationships sometimes do not survive.
