Communicating with Your Ex

Understand that if you have children, you will need to be flexible and open about how you will parent your children.  You may need to compromise more than you like but you need to remember that the best interest of your children comes first.  You will also need to focus on the task of parenting, instead of focusing on your own emotions.  Parents who cooperate with each other tend to have children who are better able to cope and recover from their parent’s divorce.  If matters become overwhelmingly intolerable, you may need to seek legal intervention to devise another method for communicating with your ex spouse.

Understand your intentions for talking with you ex-spouse.  Make sure you aren’t looking for reasons to talk with your ex-spouse just so you can still feel connected to them.  If you truly want to establish a friendly relationship with them, know that this will take time.

If you can’t talk to you ex without hostility, choose another method of communication until you feel ready to talk with them face to face.  E-mail them, send a letter or meet in a public place.  Avoid communicating through mutual friends, as what you say is never relayed the way you say it.
