Dating and Children
When you are divorced and have children,
dating takes on whole new issues. You
not only have to make sure you are
comfortable with the idea of dating, but
you need to evaluate your children’s
ability to cope with your dating. Set
aside time without the children for
hobbies, exercise and to be with
friends. This will make it easier to
begin dating because your children will
have become accustomed to your being out
with others. Though you do not need
their approval to date, it is important
that your children do not feel pushed
aside.
When you decide it is time to introduce
a date to your children, do it slowly
and be patient. Children tend to either
become attached quickly or they will
instantly hate whomever you introduce
them to. Divorce takes a toll on your
children and their ability to let others
get close to their parents. They fear
further change, loss and abandonment and
may react with anger and jealousy when
others enter their parent’s life. Make
sure you spend quality time with each
child. Children need to feel reassured
and loved at every turn.
