Dating After Divorce

Like most areas after divorce, the time to start dating is different for everyone.  Divorce takes its toll on a person’s self-esteem and trust of others.  Successful dating normally does not take place until one has been able to heal and let go of their past relationship.  Dating too early or on the rebound can lead to more heartache and emotional upheaval.  Only you will know when it will be the right time to date.

Others will attempt to be helpful by encouraging you to get out and meet new dating perspectives.  You may even find yourself set up on countless blind dates. Relatives and friends may not understand the depths of your loss and their helping may not help.  Though their intentions are genuine, you will want to explain your point of view before it harms your friendship or relationship.

When you are ready to date, consider what type of relationship involvement you want and what type of person you would like to meet.  You will notice that you have changed throughout the divorce as well.  Your needs and likes may also have changed.  If you have children, you will want to make sure the person will respect your role as a parent and who could welcome your children into their life. Then decide where would be the best place to meet that type of person.

When you begin dating, avoid talking about your past and avoid comparing your date to your ex-spouse.  Look for common interests, including their social group, values, religion, hobbies, etc.  Be honest.  The last thing you want to do is find yourself in another bad relationship.  Set your own pace and be true to yourself.  If it’s not right for you, say so.
